Sciaccarellu: the story of a typical Corsican grape variety

Sciaccarellu: the story of a typical Corsican grape variety

An island variety since the 14th century

Used to make remarkably delicate red wines with a light ruby color, it has peppery notes, complemented by red fruit, hints of spices, and scents of maquis flowers. “Sciacca” in the Corsican language refers to the idea of crunchiness. Sciaccarellu was introduced to the island in the 14th century with the arrival of the Pisans.

With its distinctive characteristic of ripening early while retaining its acidity, Sciaccarellu is an iconic grape variety that is essential to Corsica. Its name is often synonymous with finesse and elegance, and it is a variety that conceals surprising flavors that produce exceptional wines.

It thrives particularly well in granite soils, which are mainly found in western Corsica and the Ajaccio appellation, for example, which stretches from the north of the Gulf of Sagone to the south of Valinco.

Particularly recommended with grilled meats, charcuterie, and mature cheeses, Sciaccarellu is also a perfect accompaniment to tapas and sushi.
